Poppy Fund Donation Updates

Many of our elderly veterans reside in personal care facilities and others have hospital stays in Winnipeg.  The Manitoba & NW Ontario Provincial Command’s Joint Hospital Visiting Committee has a dedicated group of volunteers that make a once a month visit to veterans.  At Christmas and Easter an extra treat is delivered.  This fall, the Steinbach Legion donated $500 to support this committee.

The Steinbach Legion made a special donation from the Poppy Fund to the Fort McMurray Wildfire Relief Fund in the amount of $5,000.00. While the Poppy Fund as specific rules on the use of these funds, if the Federal or Provincial government declares a state of disaster, the Royal Canadian Legion authorizes that a portion of the Poppy Fund can be used to assist with relief efforts.  The donation by the Steinbach Legion will go to the Alberta-North West Territory Provincial Command which has set up a central fund to coordinate the collection and dispersal of donations.  They will be donating 50% of the funds to the Red Cross for emergency funding and 50% will be accessible for those requesting assistance.  These emergency funds will be used for all those affected by the fire, not only Veterans.

The Steinbach Legion donated $1,626 from the Poppy Fund to Bethesda Place for the purchase of 2 new over-bed tables and 5 bedside floor mats.

The Steinbach Legion also presented the Bethesda Regional Hospital with a cheque for $4,000 to purchase a new spirometer machine.  With this machine, specially trained staff can test a persons’ lungs for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or asthma.  To read more about this donation (click here).

This was for the purchase of four long-term care mattresses to be used in their personal care unit.

The Steinbach Branch also donated $1,000 to Deer Lodge Centre for the replacement of over-bed tables.
