Poppy Fund Donation Updates
Many of our elderly veterans reside in personal care facilities and others have hospital stays in Winnipeg. At Christmas and Easter an extra treat is delivered. This fall, the Steinbach Legion donated $500 to support this committee.
The Steinbach Legion made a special donation from the Poppy Fund to the Fort McMurray Wildfire Relief Fund in the amount of $5,000.00. While the Poppy Fund as specific rules on the use of these funds, if the Federal or Provincial government declares a state of disaster, the Royal Canadian Legion authorizes that a portion of the Poppy Fund can be used to assist with relief efforts. The donation by the Steinbach Legion will go to the Alberta-North West Territory Provincial Command which has set up a central fund to coordinate the collection and dispersal of donations. They will be donating 50% of the funds to the Red Cross for emergency funding and 50% will be accessible for those requesting assistance. These emergency funds will be used for all those affected by the fire, not only Veterans.

Local Veterans presented with Knight of the French National Order
The Royal Canadian Legion Steinbach Branch #190 would like to congratulate Comrades Bennie Klick, Lloyd Lehman and John Owczar on receiving the Knight of the French National Order of the Legion of Honour Medal. A special awards ceremony was held on Sunday, May 8th, 2016 to honour these veterans for their service during World War II and their participation with the liberation of France. The medals were presented by Monsieur Bruno Burnichon, Honorary Consul of France. The date is of special significance as it is also known as V-E Day, which celebrates the end of World War II in Europe. The Steinbach Legion would like to thank Monsieur Burnichon and his wife for attending the ceremony as well as the Prairie Thistle Pipe band, Mr. Ryan Aubrey, Stoneybrook Air Cadet Squadron #307, Steinbach Scouts and the RCMP for their participation.
